Handbook
Student Mentees
Student mentees will be recruited through summer orientation,
freshman/transfer orientation classes, referrals, and advertisements,
along with volunteers throughout class rankings.
Students are generally matched with mentors based
on their academic interests, but mentors can and will be assigned
to mentees on recommendations from both the mentor and the student.
Matches are also based on compatibility. Mentees may also request
the type of mentor they would prefer to have based on gender, interests,
etc. Meetings between mentors and students are arranged according
to mutual convenience. It is up to the mentor team to continue meeting
and succeeding in goals they have set. Though a weekly schedule
is encouraged, meetings can be arranged on a need-based schedule
for the mentee.
Mentees have certain expectations throughout the first
year of their mentors program.
- Demonstrate a willingness to cooperate and learn.
- Be diligent enough to contact and utilize mentors and the PLUS
Program effectively.
- Communicate with and question mentors about academic and career
decision making skills.
- Provide mentors with an honest view of interests as well as
abilities.
- Be available to spend time and get to know your mentor throughout
the first year.
- Participate with their mentors in at least three of the social,
cultural, or educational activities and programs sponsored by
the Mentor Programs each semester.
- Mentee will be provided the opportunity to become a mentor for
other students later in their college years.
