Encourage your student to develop a relationship with the academic advisors.

All undergraduate students are assigned an academic advisor. This person may be a faculty member or a full-time advisor. Students are required to meet with their faculty advisor at least once each term in order to collaborate on a course schedule for the next term.

At the Office of Academic Advising and Retention, we are dedicated to promoting academic success by collaborating with students to:

  • clarify career and life goals
  • develop meaningful academic plans
  • optimize academic potential

We work specifically with students who are undecided in a particular major.  After your student declares a major, they will be assigned to a faculty advisor in that major.

Majors, Minors and Certificates

Your son or daughter should be exploring all the academic options offered at Eastern Kentucky University. This includes minors and certificates as well as majors. With more than 120 majors, 85 minors and 2,000 course offerings, navigating those choices can be complex and challenging. We are here to help.  We also have full time advisors in each of the 5 colleges within the University.

Your student’s transition to college

In their first semester, your student will be advised to take an orientation course.  This course is a requirement for graduation, and will cover transition to the university, university resources, and academic advising. Students also have the option to take a career seminar class, GCS199, for one credit hour.  The Career Counseling Seminar is designed to assist students with selecting a career direction and major. Career counselors who are trained to provide career guidance teach the course.

Your Timely Reminders Can Help!
Here is a list of some times during the first academic year when you can help by talking with your daughter or son to provide a timely reminder or check to see if they are on track with their academic progress.

First week of classes
Students should make sure their course schedule is manageable.  A student can add a course during the first week of classes. Also, the tutoring lab schedules will be posted at http://www.advising.eku.edu/tutoring/.

Mid October
Students should check their midterm grades on their EKU Direct account.  If your student needs to drop a full semester course, the deadline falls at midterm.

October to November
Students should be making an appointment to meet with their academic advisor to plan out their next semester's schedule.

November
Students can begin registering for their Spring classes.  Dates of when students can register are always posted in the Colonel's Compass, located at http://www.eku.edu/compass/

December
Your student should be studying for final exams! Final grades will be posted to their EKU direct account at the conclusion of final exam week.
