University Writing Requirement (UWR) Discontinuation Specifics

The EKU Board of Regents approved discontinuing the University Writing Requirement (UWR) at its April 23, 2007 meeting.

The UWR is removed from requirements ONLY for those who entered EKU Summer 2006, or later. Students whose first term of enrollment precedes Summer 2006 MUST STILL take the UWR.

The Office of Academic Testing will continue to administer the UWR to students who entered the University prior to Summer 2006. Please contact the Office of Academic Testing (859-622-1281) if you have any questions.

New Block VIII Theme Offered

Changes to POL Course Offerings

POL 210 & 211 are no longer offered. These courses satisfied old "Area" Gen. Ed. categories 10 & 11. POL 212 (a course created last year in conjunction with new gen. ed. requirements) is "non-equivalent" to POL 210/211 as of the Summer 2007 term. It will not replace a previous grade in POL 210/211, nor will it satisfy "Area" Gen. Ed. categories 10/11. Students seeking exception to this should be referred to Kelly Fox in the College of Arts & Sciences, Roark 108.

Gen. Ed. Area 5 Action Matrix

Numerous updates have been sent over the past several months related to Area 5 – Physical Education and Health – in the old "Area" General Education requirements. A matrix had been created that summarizes these changes. It will quickly guide you in the appropriate actions to be taken with any student who is under the old "Area" General Education requirements and who has not yet satisfied Area 5 requirements. The matrix can be accessed at: http://www.advising.eku.edu/advising_manual/forms/

Problems with Equivalent Courses

Old Course is equivalent to    New Course
HPR 180 (1 credit)   PHE 180 (3 credits)
HEA 281 (2 credits)      HEA 285 (3 credits)

Students who have already taken HPR 180 and subsequently take PHE 180 will replace the grade they got in HPR 180 with the grade they get in PHE 180. The same holds true for students who have taken HEA 281 and subsequently take HEA 285.

Students who need to take a course to satisfy "old" gen. ed. category 19 (formerly satisfied by HEA 281) should NOT take PHE 180 if they have already taken HPR 180. Instead, they should take either BIO 310, HEA 285, or NFA 201.

ANT 200 Allowed for Old "Area" Gen. Ed. Categories 10 or 11

As part of the transition to the new "block" Gen. Ed. requirements ANT 210 and ANT 211 were removed from available course listings. These courses were among the choices for old "area" Gen. Ed. categories 10 and 11. At the same time, a new course ANT 200 was created and made part of Block Va in the new Gen. Ed. ANT 200 is now allowed to satisfy a requirement in old "Area" Gen. Ed. categories 10 or 11.

Impact of New "Block" Gen. Ed. on Current Students

Implementation of the new "Block" General Education requirements may impact many current students in a number of different ways. Advisees will be seeking your insight and counsel regarding their options.

This alert provides the information and tools you will need to address students' needs.

The issues:

  • Any student enrolled prior to Fall 2006 may choose to move up to the new Block Gen. Ed. if it serves them to do so
  • Any student enrolled prior to Fall 2006 may choose to move up to the new program plan for their major if it serves them to do so
  • This is a one-time move. Students who move up may not later opt to move back to the old requirements
  • Students in any teaching major: "Catalog Year" for both Gen. Ed. and major requirements must match
  • Students will be strongly encouraged to consult with their advisors before moving to new requirements.

The Tools:

  1. General Education Planning Worksheets are available for both the old "Category" and the new "Block" General Education programs. These are available on the Advising Website at: http://www.advising.eku.edu/advising_manual/forms/
  2. There is an added function to the Online CARES Report that will allow students and advisors to run exploratory CARES Reports using the New Gen. Ed.
  3. To be moved to the new requirements for Gen. Ed. and/or for their major students must get the appropriate form(s) from their academic advisors. The Gen. Ed. form is at: http://www.advising.eku.edu/advising_manual/forms/.

The Issue:

  • Because of the current or pending suspension of certain courses a limited number of automatic "exceptions" will be allowed for students moving from the current Gen. Ed. to the new Block Gen. Ed.

The Information:

  • NAT 101 and NAT 171 were cross-listed with equivalent courses that are in the new Block Gen. Ed. IF students who took either of these courses move to the new Gen. Ed. these courses will go into the appropriate blocks: NAT 101 = Block IVa; NAT 171 = Block IVb.
  • All courses in the Physical Education and Health – Area Five (current Gen. Ed.): To properly place students who have not completed Area 5 requirements, please refer to the action matrix at: http://www.advising.eku.edu/advising_manual/forms/
    GenEd_AreaV_01-18-07.pdf

The Issue:

  • Course prefixes or structures have changed for a number of Fall 2006 general education courses.

The Information:

  • ART to ARH – Several art history classes with the former prefix of ART are listed for Fall 2006 as ARH. Note that ART 200 retains that prefix
  • MUS to MUH – All the music history classes with the former prefix of MUS are listed for Fall 2006 as MUH including the popular MUH 171 and MUS 273
  • CHE 101, 105, 111, 112 – As of Fall 2006, these courses all have labs with separate course codes: CHE 101/107, CHE 105/107, CHE 111/115, CHE 112/112 lab. Students may register for the lecture portion of the courses without registering for the lab. Students who do not take the lab concurrently with the lecture may take it in a future semester. However, students may not take the lab prior to taking the lecture. Students will not satisfy the General Education requirement for physical lab science until they have completed both the lecture and the lab components
  • GLY 108, 109 & 304 have undergone title and content changes
  • PHE 200 has undergone a title and content change.

Choice of Catalog Year for Students Enrolled Prior to Fall 2006 Term

Current students and those who first enroll for the Summer 2006 term have the choice of continuing under the current General Education requirements OR moving up to the new requirements that are in force for Fall 2006. These students may also choose to move up to the Fall 2006 catalog year for their major requirements. Students may select one or both of these options. Relative benefit to the student must be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Course Repeat Policy Revision

Previously, students could not repeat courses in which they had earned an "A" or "B". As of March 8, this limitation is no longer in force. Other aspects of the Repeat Policy described on p. 41 of the current Undergraduate Catalog remain in force.

Discontinuation of HPR 180 – Fitness and Wellness (1 hour) and HEA 281 – Personal and Community Health (2 hours)

HPR 180 and HEA 281 will be discontinued after the Fall 2006 term. Students whose current General Education requirements include these courses should attempt to complete the requirements during the Spring 2006, Summer 2006 or Fall 2006 terms. Students who stop out and are readmitted after Fall 2006 will be handled on a case-by-case basis. While HPR 390 is basically the same as HPR 282, we will not have a course on the books that we can state will be automatically used to substitute HPR 180 after its suspension. Many students may opt to switch to the new gen ed program and may need to take the new PHE 180 or HEA 285 course (each three hours) to fulfill the Wellness block.

General Studies Degree Clarifications

  1. Individuals seeking General Studies degrees should understand that this degree may not provide adequate credentialing for their career aspirations; e.g., teacher certification. Students considering the General Studies degree should be referred to the General Studies degree advisor in the college that will confer the degree.
  2. Individuals seeking General Studies degrees do not need to be currently enrolled.
  3. Individuals seeking General Studies degrees must meet the standard requirements of other degrees. General Education course work will be accepted regardless of the term in which it was taken. However, course work in the major that is more than eight (8) years old must be evaluated by the dean of the college of the student's major.

Elimination of Cross-Listing for CHE 101, CHE 105 and CHE 111

As of the current term (Spring 2005) students will no longer forfeit credit if they take more than one of the above-listed CHE courses. Prior to this term these CHE classes were "cross-listed" and students taking more than one of these classes had to choose which course would be applied to the degree and which one to throw away.
