  • Be a good listener.
  • Assist students in making their own decisions.
  • Value and understand the diversity of students.
  • Pay close attention to CARES Report when doing course schedules with students.
    • Are there any unmet Pre-College Curriculum (PCC) Requirements?
    • Are there any unmet Developmental Course Requirements?
    • Will student have to sign up for the University Writing Requirement (UWR)?
  • Interpreting ACT Scores on the CARES Report
    • ACT scores are found in the upper left-hand quadrant on page one (1) of each student's CARES Report. Scores are listed just below the advisor information.
    • Students who have completed multiple ACT tests will have multiple sets of scores.
    • EKU course placement is based on the highest score in each of the English, mathematics and reading sections of the ACT test.
    • ACT scores listed on the CARES Report read from left to right as follows:
      1) English, 2) mathematics, 3) reading, 4) science reasoning, 5) composite.
  • Be sure to remind students if they plan to attend another college over the summer, they must find the course equivalents to EKU courses by using the Summer School Course Transfer (SSCT) option.
  • If you need a refresher in how to interpret the CARES Report go to www.advising.eku.edu/cares/.
  • Try to create a reasonable academic schedule that will match the student's academic history with availability of appropriate courses.
  • Discuss the importance of time and classroom location considerations and the part it plays in formulating a successful class schedule.
  • Maintain a record of significant interactions with advisees for future reference--an electronic or paper file for each advisee.
  • When in doubt, seek out answer from the catalog and advisors' manual, professional advising staff, or administrative assistants in your college.
  • Please note that students enrolling or re-enrolling over the age of 25 do not have to take HPR classes.
  • Students may not take courses more than one level above their current classification without advisor's permission (e.g., freshmen should not be placed in 300 or 400 level classes without careful consideration given by an advisor).
  • A student must first be pursuing a baccalaureate degree in order to obtain a minor.
  • Inform undeclared students about the 60 credit hour major declaration policy. Students must officially declare their major prior to registration during the semester in which they are registered for their 60th hour.
  • Remind students about the UWR requirement. Students must take the exam in the first semester of enrollment after completing their 60th credit hour. Transfer students who transfer 60 credit hours or more must take the exam during their first semester of enrollment.
  • MAT 098 course satisfies PCC mathematics requirement. It is also intended for students who plan to take MAT 107, but require additional preparation based on ACT and/or math placement scores. Students with an ACT mathematics score below 22, but desiring MAT 107 should be assigned to MAT 098. Students will have an opportunity to test up to MAT 107 prior to the beginning of the term. Provide students assigned to MAT 098 with a flyer listing the placement testing dates.
  • All developmental classes must be completed prior to taking MAT 105 and EDF 103.
