Advisor: Preparation

  • My office hours and other times available for advising are posted.
  • I am accessible to students via telephone and/or e-mail.
  • I have reviewed advisor updates, schedules of classes, and advisor manual for academic policy changes.

Advisor & Student: Put it into practice

  • Reviewed the student's CARES report
  • Discussed any potential issues or concerns and their remedies
  • Discussed future course selections
  • Discussed any other pertinent information the student may need to know

Advisor: Follow-Up

  • Documented specific notes about my advisee's circumstances
  • Maintained a meaningful relationship with my advisee
  • Encouraged the student to assume primary responsibility in the advising process (Prior to advising session encourage student to print out a CARES Report and provide a list of proposed classes)
  • Referred student to appropriate campus resources as needed
